Oppenheimer Movie Review

To start, I’ve been putting this review off as it took my a while to put my thoughts together on this film. With that in mind, thank you for your patience my loyal followers.

A quick aside before I get started. I had the privilege of going to Los Alamos in May of this year, right before this movie was released. The natheal beauty of that area cannot be understated, the deserts of New Mexico are quickly becoming one of my favorite places on the planet. Therefore, if renowned genius Dr. Oppenheimer and I both share a favorite place, does that make me a genius as well? Food for thought.

I’ve always though Christopher Nolan was an extremely overrated director. I’ve always felt that he gets in his own way, most of his movies are incredible visually, usually with unique set pieces and story concepts. Sometimes it works, as with his earlier works. Sometimes it doesn’t, the back act of Interstellar, Tenant, and Dunkirk for example.

With that in mind, this is the kind of film that Nolan really should be making. This movie is less a movie about the creation of the Atom bomb, and more about the scientist that birthed it.

Oppenheimer the scientist was a deeply interesting man, a charismatic, almost rakish man. A bone thin scientist turned cowboy turned celebrity. If anything this 3 hour movie could have shown us more of what he did after the bomb’s creation.

That’s the magic of Oppenheimer, at 3 hours long it is a marathon, but still you want to dive deeper into the Manhattan project, the scientists that made it possible and the politicians that controlled our nuclear program after its inception. Nolan did a great job of showing us a slew of interesting characters that we, the audience want to get to know.

I can’t call this movie perfect as Nolan is not without his usual flaws. Namely, I’m not sure a period piece about a scientist needs three different timelines. But this is in my opinion Christopher Nolan’s best work since the first half of Interstellar. My only serious complaint comes from the fact that I was promised full frontal from both Florence Pugh and Cilian Murphy and I received only the normal level of nudity allowed in theaters today.

Oppenheimer gets 4.5 stars from me. A great movie and the best new release I’ve seen this year. #releasethedongcut

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

This week I went to see Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. To start this review off, I never thought Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was as bad as people act like it is. A far cry from the original 3, yes, but a solid 5/10 adventure movie. I feel like this is worth mentioning since it seems like this movie has been doomed to fail since it’s announcement, paying for the sins of its predecessor and unfairly compared to some of the most entertaining movies of all time.

I saw this movie in IMAX, and while I don’t think IMAX really adds a ton to this movie in particular, the more epic scenes were very enjoyable on the extra large screen.

The movie opens with a flashback action scene of our titular character taking on the Nazis during the end of their reign in 1945. While I have never really gotten over the use of de-aging technology, I have to admit it was fairly well done here. A classic Indiana Jones action scene with a modern spin to start the movie off, nice. As the movie begins in earnest, in 1960’s America, we see our hero at his lowest, a brief reference to the 4th movie should allow all of its detractors to enjoy the rest of this film. We meet the rest of Indy’s companions (and adversaries) over the next few scenes and I think that everyone involved did a very good job bringing their characters to life (except the kid, I understand why the character was added but I think they could have picked a better actor)

The story was in my opinion great, the McMuffin in this movie is perfect for Indiana Jones. The action was tight, fun and as believable as you could expect from an Indiana Jones movie. Some surprise cameos and some well placed jokes keep you interested the whole time. With an epic conclusion, this movie keeps you watching the whole time.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is a solid 7/10 for me, not as great as the originals but a good movie and send off to one of the most beloved characters we’ve ever known

Spider-man: Across Spiderverse

Wow what a ride. I have to admit I hardly remembered the first film in this series going in so I didn’t know what to expect. All I really remembered was crazy visuals and a soundtrack that had the whole world singing “Sunflower” by Post Malone. With that in mind, I was hoping for the same from this one.

Absolutely blown away by the art direction and music for this movie. They nailed it again. The way each of the universes had their own styles and how each matched the individual spider-people that resided in the universe worked flawlessly. To go along with the variety of world and Spiders we saw was an incredible soundtrack. That while missing a hit as renowned as “Sunflower” really hit on all cylinders. I found myself listening to the music the next morning during my commute and will no doubt add many of the sounds to my daily playlists.

I’m going to keep this review spoiler free but I want to hit the main story beats. This was a movie on the longer end of the spectrum (over 2 hours) but I found myself wishing for more when it ended. I cannot wait to see how the conflicts involving Miles and the other Spider-people close out in the next chapter. I thought they did a great job making this movie feel like it could stand on its own two feet while also keeping the tension for its inevitable sequel.

Final rating 4.5/5 stars. The story, comedy and writing are worth the price of admission alone. The music and visuals make you come back for more.

Sports Update 5/3/2023

Good morning and happy Hump day! The masses are clamoring, the fans are howling, and the people are shouting. The success of my first sports post cannot be understated. To follow up on greatness is always difficult but I will persevere.

Basketball

The NBA playoffs are here, the first round is over and we got to see who are the pretenders, and who are the contenders. unfortunately for me, the Bucks were pretenders. Unfortunately for all of America, the Warriors look to be contenders. Let’s start with my round 2 matchups to get some insight into the key series.

76ers-Celtics

Two powerhouse franchises, you have the Scions of Brotherly Love vs a bunch of Leprechauns. A tough matchup with a lot of grit. Unfortunately the loss of Joel Embiid give the Celtics a major advantage.

Heat-Knicks

Who would’ve had the Heat going past the first round, what an epic underdog story. Jimmy Buckets showing again how being the biggest dog doesn’t matter so much as having the biggest fight inside. (I know that doesn’t make any sense but I don’t care). I gotta go Buckets on this one, if only because knickerbocker is a dumb word.

Lakers-Warriors

Honestly as much as I hate how star driven the NBA has become, I have to admit that all I or anybody else wants to see is Lebron James taking on Steph Curry year after year. The NBA is at its best when Lebron James is fighting for his life, his teammates MIA, against historic dynasties. We’ve seen this fight before, first with the Spurs, and repeatedly with the Warriors. I love this battle, long live the King. I throw my support behind Lebron once again.

Baseball

Baseball, my sweet mistress. It’s been a tough 2 weeks since my last post and I have to say I have been avoiding this post. The Brew Crew and it’s nation have been dethroned from first place by stupid Pittsburgh, my local Nationals have continued to dwell in Baseball’s basement and Indians still haven’t changed their name back. I don’t want to talk about Baseball anymore, the pain is too much. See my picks below

Let’s Make Some Money

5/4 Blue jays over red sox -1.5

5/5 white Sox vs reds, under 9 runs

5/4 nuggets over suns moneyline

5/6 Miami heat vs knicks over 208.5

Running Update 4/26

Hello and good morning! Quick update on my running progress.

With my ultra marathon career taking a break until my next race in October, I am free to work on speed instead of raw endurance. While training for long distance races yields its own rewards (5 hour runs every weekend) I do prefer keeping my runs shorter and faster.

My main training focus until mid June will be on regaining my sub 20 minute 5k fitness. Maybe even a foray into the sub 19 minute club. To do this I need to strengthen my legs and crank my cardio fitness into overdrive. Focusing mainly on speed workouts combined with “slow” long distance days is the name of the game.

The Workouts

Last week I polished off 30 miles. Two early morning 10 mile “long” runs with a goal pace of 9:20 that I accidentally beat with a sub 9 pace (oops) along with a series of 5 800 repeats as a speed workout. The remaining 5 miles took the form of another tempo run, focused on maintaining a sub 8:30 pace and burning off the massive piece of baby shower cake I ate on Saturday.

Public Service announcements

In other news, I finally broke down and downloaded Strava! Great tool to really compare yourself to others and feel an impending sense of dread at your lacking cardio fitness! Add me!

The other, possibly more important piece of running related news is the new hype song I found courtesy of Spotify linked below .

Let me know what you guys think about the new song, the progress and add me on Strava! another big week in progress so far, with hopefully some wargaming updates coming soon!

Brands to watch Spring 2023

Hello and Happy Hump-day. Thought this would be a great time to showcase some of the brands that I have been keeping an eye on.

Sendero Provisions Company

Sendero Provisions Company

I found these guys in a New Mexico outdoor store and I fell in love with their killer hats immediately. I bought 3 on the spot and have snagged a couple more in the year since. Recently they started their button down shirt line, and their shirts may be better than their hats.

Cove USA

Cove USA

Haven’t personally grabbed any of this oceanside themed brand but I have had an eye on their stellar collection of tees and hats.

Remu Apparel

Remu Apparel

Handmade goods in Ecuador. These clothes ooze style, especially their wool jackets

LL Bean

LL Bean

We all know this brand and we all love it. Can’t go wrong with this Vermont based outdoor brand. Quality clothes for fair prices, I’ve typically relied on this brand to get me through the winter, I now look at their shirts and light jackets to keep me comfortable this spring

Naked and Famous

Naked and Famous

Great jeans, good prices. Recommended by my resident frugal fashionista Ben- This denim company promises to impress.

Vuori Clothing Brand

Vuori

Athleisure brands aren’t normally my style but I cannot deny the quality that this brand is putting out. My go to sweats and shorts for errand running and a lazy day on the couch

Thursday Boots

Thursday Boots

I own more boots than I care to admit, but my two pairs of Thursday boots have been a staple of my closet for 5 years now. I prefer my Service Boots with no toe caps but they offer selections of both styles

Let me know what you guys think. Am I missing any essentials? Anything I’m dead wrong on?

The Beginning of Baseball Season

I know, I know, Opening Day has come and gone. Opening day for me is just this week though as I get ready to attend my first game of the year featuring the Washington Nationals and the Baltimore Orioles. In honor of this, and the fact that some of my most loyal readers are looking to make some money off of my super dope baseball picks, I’ll post my first picks.

The Season so far

What can I say about Baseball that has not been said a hundred times before? A baseball game is the greatest way to spend a summer day and we all know it. Inspiring incredible movies like Baseketball, Bull Durham, The Rookie, and The Benchwarmers. All of which I have watched recently to get back into the Baseball mindset. Here are my thoughts so far, and then my picks for the next week or so.

The Highs

  • What a crazy start to this season! The Devil Rays of Tampa Bay have exploded to a 14-2 start, absolutely triumphant return to form for these guys.
  • My Milwaukee Brewers have also had an incredible season so far, winning their opening series against the Cubs and then maintaining a first place position in the division. Great start, lets hope we don’t fall off like years prior
  • The Nationals are terrible…Why is that a good thing? Its means that I can go to my local MLB games regularly as the tickets are cheap. Even though it will be bad baseball, $30 for 2 tickets is an easy Friday night that I cannot complain about.

The Lows

  • The Phillies have come off of their World Series appearance with a whimper, not a bang. I feel for the city of brotherly love, it has been a tough year for them. I hope to see them come back but I’m not holding my breath.

The Picks

  • 03/17/23 Reds +1.5 over The Devil Rays
  • 03/17/23 Mets Vs Dodgers Over 8.5 runs
  • 03/18/23 Nationals +1.5 over Orioles
  • 03/18/23 Twins Money Line
  • Season Long bets- AL winner- Blue Jays
  • Brewers to win NL Central
  • Brewers to win NL
  • Mets to win NL East
  • Angels to win AL west
  • Aaron Judge to as HR leader

Lets check back in a couple days to see how our picks do. Next up we will be looking at Hockey and Basketball Playoffs. Let me know what y’all think about the above picks and let me know how much money you win.

First Ultra in Review…and Beyond

I’m a little over a month post race at this point which I cannot believe. Was truly the hardest physical challenge I’ve ever attempted. Though giving myself only 2.5 months to train was not the path to greatness I originally hoped I did get the job done, not with a good time but with a finishing time nonetheless.

Above-Thundering ahead, nearing the 28 mile mark

How did it go:

Frankly, the veteran Cross country runner in me is not happy with my time. I averaged a 13’22” mile for the race with a final time of 7:25:38. While I can blame the hilly course, the foul weather, the mud and the extra 2 miles added to what was already the longest race I’ve ever run by a 25 mile margin I have to blame myself first and foremost. I was undertrained and under prepared. That being said, I finished a race that many people will never even attempt, this brings me great pride.

The finishing proof

Lessons learned:

  • Hydration- My camelback, full of water was far too heavy for a long distance race like this. Especially on a 40 degree winter day. In the future I’ll underfill the bag or find a smaller water bottle that can be filled up at aid stations
  • Training- 2.5 months is not enough to go from couch to trail 50k. Not with a good time, and not on hilly terrain like this at least. I needed more mileage, and more hills in my training program
  • Clothing- I actually nailed this part. Had a variety of layers that I was able to switch between as the temperature changed throughout the day.
  • Keep your mind sharp- after 7 hours of running I really lost the mental game, with just a couple miles left I felt my will falter. Only way I was able to get it back was by keeping a positive attitude, and cracking jokes. At the final aid station, after over half of the 100 finishers, I asked the volunteers “you guys know how far in front I am” to a couple motivating laughs. Pic related

The Future:

My ultra career is just beginning, of that I am sure. The first thing I said as I sat in the car, writhing in pain to my Girlfriend was “I’m doing this again”. Now whether that was due to my masochistic desire to destroy my body or due to the fact that I know that I was capable of more I cannot say. What I can say is that I’ve signed up for a 50 mile race on October 14th in Chicago, a race that promises to be flat, and with ample training time, I am confident that I will finish with a strong time.

That brings me to how that applies to this blog. With a 50 miler comes hundreds of miles of training, over scores of hours split between dozens of workouts. This will not be a fun journey, but it will be an interesting one, for me at least. Stay tuned to learn, grow and sweat with me.
